A rich heritage

Waterhouse is a substantial stone country house set in the picturesque Midford Valley, just six miles from the city of Bath. Dating from 1632, when it was built as a family home, its former owners have all had a number of things in common: Ensuring that the Cornerstone of the Waterhouse Estate is built on Christian values, Charity, Love and supporting the local community. This rich heritage is something its current owners and Manager are committed to continuing to follow the vision given to Honour God in Waterhouse.

Now                                        Then

A haven for many

The Dicke family, wealthy clothiers who owned most of the surrounding valley, cared for Waterhouse for around 100 years. In 1776 the Hayward family moved in with their 11 children, owning it for over a century. Its next steward, Rev. Percy Warrington, purchased the house in 1946 and converted it into a Care Home. A true activist, Warrington started 10 schools, provided low cost housing for the poor in Monkton village and accommodated refugees during the Second World War. Founder of M&S Sir Simon Marks and his wife and daughter were amongst those who found a home at Waterhouse during the war.

After 60 years as a Care Home, in 2009 The Wilsher Trust bought Waterhouse, lovingly restoring it by reinstating many of its original features. Cornicing, wooden floors, Carrara marble and stone fireplaces, wooden shutters and oak staircases resurrecting the graceful style of its past.

A special visitor

Presenter of Grand Designs, Kevin McCloud, visited Waterhouse in 2012 to meet the team and discuss its development. Landscaping of the garden began soon afterwards, levelling the lawn and increasing the natural light in the dining area. A leisurely stroll in the garden will reward you with some of the best views of the Midford Valley.

The Leadership Academy

Alongside its 13 en-suite bedrooms, Waterhouse is also home to the Wilsher Group. Director Simon Wilsher says it ‘enables us to provide a beautiful and quiet environment for our leadership academy.’ Whether for work or play, Waterhouse provides an atmosphere of tranquillity in which to reside. The sense of calm is heightened by the artwork decorating its walls by local artists such as Louis Parsons and Mike Service.

World Heritage City of Bath

Once you’re ready for a little more ‘buzz,’ the city of Bath is waiting. Dating back to Roman times, Bath was built around Britain’s only natural hot spring. In 1499 Bath Abbey was built after Bishop Oliver King had a powerful vision of angels assisting with the building. In the 1700s the Royal Crescent was created in an elegant, semi-elliptical curve. Known for its famous architecture and its cultural significance, the city of Bath was designated a World Heritage site in 1987 by UNESCO. The Thermae Bath Spa opened in 2006, becoming Britain’s only natural thermal spa and continuing the city’s ancient heritage and providing a key attraction in the historic city. Surrounded by hills, Bath is the perfect place to visit for those looking for an invigorating yet restorative city break.

It was the penultimate night of our 11 nights on the road and, whilst we had been very fortunate with all of our accommodation on the previous evenings, this one absolutely took the cake, providing a 5 star experience in every aspect. • Booked the Waterhouse as we had a gig in Bath and wanted somewhere nice to stay so I found this gem of a hotel. Everything about out stay was pretty perfect from start to finish. We had room 2 (Shannon) which was beautifully decorated, not over the top so you feel awkward but comfortable and charming with a stunning view. We were given a very warm welcome and were made to feel right at home from the start. We opted for breakfast which was lovely (I wish I ate eggs because they looked delicious!) and the owners did everything to accomadate us. Read More »

  • Our decision to stay at the Waterhouse was a bit spontaneous but we were more than pleasantly surprised. We only spent one night for a quick visit to Bath; however, it turns out this Inn is a perfect "get-away" location and we wished we could have stayed longer. The picturesque countryside location (just outside Bath) sets the scene for a quiet retreat. The rooms were very clean and comfortable with great ensuites. The dining is fabulous. Both dinner and breakfast were elegant and 5 star. Stephen and Timar went way beyond in their hospitality. Given the opportunity, we would definitely stay here again; highly recommend. Read More »
